Review examines cell therapies for children’s brain tumors

This systematic review examined experimental immune-cell therapies for pediatric brain tumors, combining preclinical animal studies with early clinical evidence. Animal studies reported antitumor activity for several targets, while small clinical programs reported some tumor regressions, stable disease, and treatment-related side effects that varied by delivery route. The findings are preliminary and do not establish a routine treatment for patients.

Processed probiotics helped calves grow better than feed antibiotics

A study of 40 young cattle calves found that processed probiotics improved growth and several gut-health measures more than chlortetracycline or no supplement. Encapsulated and freeze-dried formulations also increased beneficial bacteria, reduced two potentially harmful bacteria and, for encapsulated probiotics, improved some immune measures.

Review finds mixed evidence for hyperbaric oxygen in muscle and bone problems

This systematic review examined 19 human clinical studies involving 612 patients who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy for selected muscle, ligament, tendon, and bone conditions. Results were mixed: randomized studies did not find a significant benefit for exercise-related muscle damage or delayed muscle soreness, while studies of avascular necrosis and bone marrow edema more consistently reported improvements. The review does not establish that hyperbaric oxygen works for all musculoskeletal conditions.

The SCAN-C cipher gains no security from unusual key mixing

A full-round analysis of the SCAN-C cipher found that its unusual XNOR key mixing adds no security compared with XOR. The researchers also report that the specified 12-round design can be attacked in an analysis requiring around 2^55 chosen plaintexts and 2^69 encryptions.

Study links GLP-1 drugs with lower dementia risk than long-acting insulin

In a large study of adults over 50 with type 2 diabetes in Taiwan, new dementia diagnoses were less frequent among people who started a GLP-1 receptor agonist than among matched people who started long-acting insulin. The study was observational, so it cannot determine whether the medicines caused the difference.
