New analysis finds fewer broad antibiotics after tooth-extraction guidelines in Japan

Researchers analyzed Japanese health-insurance claims for people aged 75 or younger who had tooth extractions between April 2012 and March 2024. After dental antibiotic guidelines were introduced or updated, use of third-generation cephalosporins fell overall, especially in some hospitals and later in dental clinics; surgical-site infection rates did not change in the analysis. Because this was an observational study, the findings show patterns associated with the guidelines rather than proving that the guidelines alone caused them.

Review estimates brain infection in about 1 in 4 people with seizures

Researchers reviewed 77 studies published from 1990 through 2023 to estimate how often neurocysticercosis—a brain infection caused by the larval stage of a tapeworm—occurred among people with epileptic seizures. Across studies with clear definitions and appropriate testing, the estimated proportion was 25.2%, but the studies differed substantially and the result should not be treated as universal.

Review examines neurological causes of unusual vocal-cord movement

Researchers conducted a systematic review of published human studies on paradoxical vocal fold motion linked to confirmed disorders of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, or related systems. Across 11 included studies, 42 patients were identified with both this vocal-fold movement problem and a confirmed neurological disorder. The findings describe reported associations and treatment outcomes; they do not establish how common these causes are or prove that one condition caused another.

Study links updated COVID-19 vaccination with fewer hospital stays in rheumatic disease

This retrospective human cohort study examined 60,980 adults with autoimmune rheumatic conditions who developed COVID-19 between December 2020 and August 2024. Researchers found that vaccinated patients, including those who received an updated 2023–2024 vaccine or a booster, had lower adjusted odds of COVID-19-related hospitalization than patients with no recorded vaccine doses. The study found associations, not proof that vaccination caused the lower risk.
