Researchers used a version of a climate model that includes a cloud-resolving model to examine how convection and large-scale circulation interact during the South Asian monsoon’s onset. The simulations produced a more abrupt onset than a comparable model without the cloud-resolving component.
The analysis points to shallow convection over the northern Indian Ocean about 20 days before onset. The associated circulation transported moist energy from the lower atmosphere into the region, where it accumulated near 15°N. The resulting contrast in lower-atmosphere moist energy helped initiate a circulation associated with the monsoon’s onset.
