Researchers used live imaging to study the sub-intestinal venous plexus, a developing network of blood vessels in zebrafish. They found that blood flow coordinated the collective movement of endothelial cells, the cells that line blood vessels, during network remodelling.
Blood flow opposed the cells’ continued movement toward the belly and was needed for non-perfused leading sprouts to regress as the plexus grew. Cells from these sprouts moved against the flow and joined the sub-intestinal vein. When flow was low, sprout regression could still occur but depended on the Vegfr3/Flt4 signalling pathway.
