Monkeys learned to link arbitrary visual patterns with movements of the left or right hand. As learning progressed, Purkinje cells in two cerebellar regions increasingly distinguished specific visual cue–hand combinations, with the visual cue becoming identifiable before the choice.
In trained mice, deep-layer neurons in the auditory cortex developed categorical responses to sounds that differed in their temporal rate. These neurons also carried strong signals related to the animals’ choices, linking sound classification with behavior.
In an exploratory study of eight people, ultra-high-frequency flickering visual stimulation increased sharp-wave ripples in the hippocampus during wakefulness. The result suggests a possible noninvasive way to influence a memory-related brain rhythm, but the study did not test whether memory improved.
