Newborn mice given too much food later developed more severe muscle loss, metabolic problems and shorter lifespans than control mice. Persistent changes in the gut mucus barrier and a decline in the bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila were linked to these effects.
A meta-analysis reviewed seven randomized trials of fecal microbiota transplantation, sometimes called a stool transplant, in people with Parkinson’s disease. The analysis found some short-term changes in overall symptoms, selected non-motor symptoms, and bowel function, but benefits were not consistently sustained and adverse events were more common.
Researchers studied 4,695 very preterm infants in Sweden and compared outcomes among those who did and did not receive a three-strain probiotic supplement. Probiotic exposure was associated with lower rates of death and necrotizing enterocolitis, a serious intestinal disease, but was not clearly associated with culture-confirmed sepsis.
This systematic review examined human studies on gut microbiome changes and peripheral neuropathy. All seven clinical studies reported an association, and six genetic analyses were described as supporting a possible relationship, but the evidence does not prove that gut changes cause nerve problems.
