A study used satellite observations and hourly wind data to estimate methane emissions from London, Los Angeles and New York between 2021 and 2023. The satellite-based estimates were higher than existing inventories for all three cities, suggesting satellites could help check urban emissions reports and reduction targets.
A study finds that extreme, persistent split jet stream patterns are associated with heatwaves occurring at several Northern Hemisphere locations at the same time. The longer the split pattern lasted, the more often these heatwaves occurred together.
Researchers developed an artificial intelligence system to estimate how much methane is released by major sources detected by the TROPOMI satellite instrument. In tests using simulated satellite observations, it reduced typical estimation error compared with a commonly used method, while results from real observations generally agreed with independent estimates.
