A public database records their calculated electronic properties and, for selected materials, the edge states that could carry unusual quantum behavior.
Two-dimensional topological materials can host edge states protected by symmetry, making those states resistant to some kinds of disorder. They are less common in existing catalogs than three-dimensional examples, so the researchers adapted a classification method for two-dimensional crystal layers and applied it to computational materials databases.
The study identified 905 topological insulators and 1,003 obstructed atomic insulators, alongside other topological or obstructed entries. The team compiled calculated electronic and topological properties in the Topological 2D Materials Database and examined edge states in selected newly identified materials.
What the catalog contains
The researchers analyzed 8,872 entries from the computational materials databases C2DB and MC2D. They classified 4,073 entries as topological or obstructed, including 905 topological insulators and 1,003 obstructed atomic insulators. These categories together account for more than 1,900 predicted two-dimensional materials.
The team released the calculated properties in the Topological 2D Materials Database, or 2D-TQCDB, and studied the edge states of selected new materials in detail. They also made their analysis programs publicly available; the programs are designed to study the topology of any nonmagnetic monolayer or multilayer material.
