Association between calling and work engagement, and the mediating role of psychological capital and organizational commitment: a structural equation modeling study in China

Abstract

Abstract Purpose This research aimed to examine the association between calling and work engagement, as well as the mediating roles of psychological capital and organizational commitment. The findings may inform the development of targeted interventions to enhance work engagement among clinical nurses. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from November to December 2021, involving 630 registered nurses from a tertiary hospital in China. Correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were employed for data analysis. Results Calling was positively associated with work engagement. It showed a significant direct association with work engagement, as well as indirect associations mediated by organizational commitment and psychological capital. Conclusion Work engagement among nurses was significantly associated with calling, psychological capital, and organizational commitment. Nurse managers should set attainable goals to foster work motivation and implement appropriate strategies to enhance nurses’ sense of calling, thereby enhancing work engagement.
