Researchers report an as-cast organic solar cell with a power-conversion efficiency of 20.11%, or 19.69% in certified testing. The approach also produced devices with 15.12% efficiency over an area of 20.17 square centimeters, pointing to a simpler route for making larger solar cells.
Researchers used a precursor additive called CGBA to control how wide-bandgap perovskite films formed. The resulting cell reached 21.43% efficiency, while an all-perovskite tandem reached 29.63%; unencapsulated target devices retained 93% of their starting efficiency after 4,500 hours in nitrogen.
A review examines why making large, uniform perovskite films is difficult even though small-area perovskite solar cells have reached certified efficiencies of around 28%. It finds that controlling crystal formation across the whole film is central to producing reliable modules at scale.
Researchers developed a coating strategy that helps form uniform molecular layers on organic solar cells. In tests, it produced a large-area module with a certified efficiency of 16.1%, the highest reported for this type of self-assembled interfacial layer, according to the study.
A two-molecule layered coating helped organic solar cells maintain higher efficiency when scaled into a mini-module. The module reached 17.0% efficiency, compared with 12.2% for a single-molecule control.
