“WIC helps, but there are challenges”: A thematic analysis of Latina immigrant mothers’ experiences with Missouri’s WIC program
Abstract
This qualitative study explored Latina immigrant mothers’ experiences with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in Missouri. Twelve focus groups were conducted via Zoom (2021–2023) with 32 Latina immigrant mothers residing in Missouri. Thematic coding was conducted in NVivo 15. Five themes emerged: (1) WIC is a big help, (2) WIC’s involvement in kids’ health, (3) Negative interactions and potential microaggressions in WIC-related settings, (4) Supportive family and friends, and (5) Enduring difficulties for the family’s sake. Despite negative interpersonal encounters and potential microaggressions, mothers used social support and coping strategies to remain in WIC.
