A systematic review examined research on strategies used to address childhood obesity in Nigeria and the barriers that affect them. Across eight included studies, physical activity and dietary changes were the most commonly reported approaches, but the review found that family, school, economic and cultural conditions can affect implementation.
In a study of 156,764 UK Biobank participants, researchers examined associations between adherence to the UK Eatwell Guide and measures of body size and body fat. Higher adherence was associated with lower adiposity measures both at the initial assessment and, in the prospective analysis, with more favorable body mass index patterns over time. The study does not show that adherence caused these differences.
In this human trial, 493 adults with overweight compared non-nutritive sweetened (NNS) beverages with water for weight change over 1 year of assisted weight management plus 1 year of unassisted monitoring. Over 104 weeks, the weight loss seen with NNS beverages (4.8 kg) was not significantly different from water (3.7 kg). The study suggests both approaches had similar weight results when paired with a weight-management program.
