Durability of CO 2 mineralized materials and products

Abstract

This review provides an overview of the durability performance of CO2 mineralized cementitious materials. Most recent research emphasized the importance of post-hydration following carbonation to ensure better durability performance. Mineral carbonation generally reduces chloride binding capacity, but it can also suppress chloride transport, which may improve resistance to chloride-induced steel corrosion. When exposed to weathering carbonation, CO2 mineralized materials exhibited lower weathering carbonation coefficients compared with conventionally cured materials, provided that mineralization degree and post-curing are properly controlled. However, these benefits depend strongly on curing history, mineralization degree, and binder composition. Excessive carbonation may increase porosity, limit subsequent hydration, and weaken long-term performances. The interaction between CO2 mineralization and supplementary cementitious materials also remains insufficiently understood. Future studies should define suitable mineralization degrees, post-curing regimes, and SCM replacement levels, with standardized reporting of CO2 uptake, curing history, and pore-solution chemistry.
