From Affective Deficiency to Compensatory Overprotection: A Proposed Model of Parental Agency Substitution, Executive Undertraining, and Adult Functional Dependence

Abstract

Overprotective parenting is commonly conceptualized as the opposite of neglect. This paper proposes, instead, that the two can coexist within a single developmental trajectory: a caregiver may be affectively insufficient in a child's earliest years and later become functionally excessive, substituting instrumental care and control for the child's own developing agency. We advance three integrative constructs - parental agency substitution, the compensatory overprotection loop, and the executive effort-conservation phenotype ("the lazy brain," a translational label for a scientific construct) - and situate them within an ancestral-to-contemporary frame. Cross-cultural and evolutionary evidence indicates that human childhood evolved through protected participation in real activity rather than through isolation or continuous substitution (Hrdy, 2009; Rogoff, 2014; Lancy, 2015). Contemporary childhood, by contrast, combines intensive investment and supervision with a marked decline in independent mobility and everyday responsibility (Zelizer, 1985; Gray, Lancy, & Bjorklund, 2023). Several downstream links in the proposed chain are supported by existing research: maternal separation anxiety predicts overprotective behavior (Cooklin et al., 2013); early overcontrolling parenting predicts poorer self-regulation and later adjustment (Perry et al., 2018); autonomy-supportive parenting precedes executive functioning (Bernier, Carlson, & Whipple, 2010); and engagement in age-appropriate household tasks is associated with working memory, inhibition, and self-competence (Tepper, Howell, & Bennett, 2022; White, DeBoer, & Scharf, 2019). We state plainly that the inaugural link - from early affective insufficiency to later instrumental over-provision - is the element that lacks direct evidence and is advanced here as the model's central testable claim; the available cohort evidence speaks to anxious over-involvement, which is not the same construct. We argue that trauma, neglect, and overprotection are distinct developmental pathways that may nonetheless converge on reduced internalization of executive control, and we specify falsifiable predictions. The full compensatory sequence, its neurobiological signature, and its relation to adult functional dependence are presented as testable hypotheses, not established causation. The model's central neurobiological prediction is not uniform prefrontal hypoactivity but atypical recruitment, efficiency, or flexibility of executive-control networks under sustained autonomous demand (Menon, 2011; Dosenbach et al., 2008). Because these capacities remain plastic (Nelson et al., 2007; Lebowitz et al., 2020), the framework points toward educational and family-based intervention that gradually restores agency - helping, not curing.
