Researchers have produced probability maps showing where rocks thrown out by major explosions and paroxysms at Stromboli could fall. The maps identify exposed areas and estimate the chance of fallout over the next 10 and 50 years.
A numerical study of the 1945 Nagasaki atomic bombing simulated how the mushroom cloud formed and carried two types of material. Ground-derived dust mainly followed the central updraft, while bomb-derived radioactive material was concentrated in a rotating ring around the cloud head.
Irradiating contaminated peanuts with gamma rays or an electron beam reduced aflatoxin B1 and microbial contamination. But at higher doses—especially 10 kGy—the treated peanuts showed signs of lipid oxidation and color changes, suggesting a tradeoff between safety and quality.
