This systematic review examined clinical, lung-function, imaging, and workplace findings in people diagnosed with artificial stone silicosis, an occupational lung disease associated with dust exposure during artificial-stone work. Across the reviewed reports, some patients had severe lung changes even when standard lung tests or chest radiographs did not detect early disease.
A prospective observational study of 143 people undergoing procedures for urinary stones compared pre-surgery urine cultures with cultures taken from the stones during surgery. Stone cultures were positive more often and were associated with postoperative sepsis, while pre-surgery urine culture results were not significantly associated with sepsis. Because this was an observational study, the findings show associations rather than cause and effect.
Researchers systematically reviewed and pooled data from 26 adult cohort studies on developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) after unilateral nephrectomy. Among adults with preserved preoperative kidney function (eGFR ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m²), several baseline factors—such as older age and diabetes—and surgical approach were associated with higher odds of incident CKD.
