Researchers examined abandoned mangrove-dominated coastal areas in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta using interviews, field observations, regular monitoring and Google images. They found secondary ecological succession—a natural process in which vegetation returns after disturbance—developed in two contrasting environments, including small areas fully exposed to waves and without structural protection.
The process began when grasses, beach plants, uprooted trees, marine debris or mangrove aerial roots formed small features that trapped floating mangrove seeds and propagules. Avicennia and Rhizophora mangroves then grew in these sites. Despite their small size and exposure, the patches withstood the region’s strong seasonal waves, although some were cleared or replaced by costly erosion-control measures.
How mangroves returned
The study identified two forms of secondary ecological succession in abandoned mangrove-dominated muddy coastal areas of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, including small, fully exposed sites without structural protection. Succession began with “entrapping microsites”—small patches formed by Ischaemum and Ipomoea pes-caprae grasses, Cyperus stoloniferus, uprooted Casuarina trees, marine debris and mangrove aerial roots. These features trapped floating mangrove seeds and propagules, supporting the subsequent growth of Avicennia and Rhizophora trees. The regrowing areas withstood strong seasonal waves despite their size, extent and exposure. Some were later cleared for other coastal protection measures or replaced by costly erosion-control projects because they were considered wastelands or abandoned areas.
Evidence and caveats
The research is a case study based on semi-structured interviews, field observations, regular monitoring and analysis of Google images. It documents how regrowth developed and that the observed patches withstood strong seasonal waves. The abstract does not provide numerical measurements of wave strength, shoreline change, erosion reduction, patch area or the number of sites studied. It also does not establish that the mangrove patches outperformed other coastal protection measures or that the findings apply to all muddy coasts.
