Researchers studied echolocating Japanese bent-winged bats (Miniopterus fuliginosus) using controlled playback experiments. The bats responded to jamming-like sounds by adjusting the frequencies of their calls, and the researchers identified a mathematical model describing this behavior.

They then used the model to simulate bats flying together in two dimensions. In the simulation, the bats generally increased the differences between their call frequencies, which reduced potential misdetections and improved the group’s overall sensory accuracy.
