A new measure focuses on whether players can leave a game behind and resume everyday activities after playing.
Researchers introduced a measure called Post-Gaming Return, which assesses two parts of the transition out of gaming: how easily players disengage from the game and how easily they re-engage with daily activities. They tested it in two studies involving 259 and 193 active gamers, alongside measures of mood, psychological needs, vitality, life satisfaction and gaming disorder symptoms.
Post-Gaming Return was associated with more positive mood and satisfaction of psychological needs after gaming, and with less negative mood and frustration. It also predicted greater vitality and fewer gaming disorder symptoms beyond participants’ reasons for escapism. The two parts of the measure showed different patterns: ease of disengagement was most strongly linked to fewer gaming disorder symptoms, while ease of re-engagement was linked to vitality and life satisfaction.
What happens after gaming
Higher Post-Gaming Return scores were associated with positive mood and satisfaction of psychological needs after gaming, and with lower negative mood and need frustration. In both studies, Post-Gaming Return predicted greater vitality and fewer gaming disorder symptoms even after accounting for escapism motives.
The measure’s two parts were linked to different outcomes. Ease of disengaging from the game was the strongest negative predictor of gaming disorder symptoms. Ease of re-engaging in daily activities was associated with vitality and life satisfaction. In the second study, Post-Gaming Return had only weak correlations with general mood and apathy, which supports the idea that it measures a more specific post-gaming process.
Why the return matters
The findings suggest that escapism is not defined only by the reason someone plays. What happens after play—whether a person can stop gaming and return to everyday activities—may help distinguish escapist gaming associated with well-being from play associated with problematic outcomes.
The Post-Gaming Return scale could give researchers a tool for examining whether players successfully regulate the transition between gaming and daily life. The study supports a shift toward models that include this transition, rather than focusing only on static gaming motives.
Evidence and caveats
The evidence comes from two studies of active gamers, with 259 participants in the first and 193 in the second. Participants completed self-report scales, and the researchers used regression analyses to test whether Post-Gaming Return was associated with mood, well-being and gaming disorder symptoms.
These results show predictive associations, not that difficulty returning from gaming causes gaming disorder symptoms or lower well-being. The abstract does not report an experimental test or long-term follow-up, so it does not establish how these patterns develop over time or how broadly they apply beyond the study samples.
