Researchers used firefly communication as an example of how a signal can be recognized without being complex or understood. Fireflies use evolved flash patterns that distinguish them from visual backgrounds, and the researchers applied this idea to signals from pulsars, rapidly rotating astronomical objects that produce regular pulses.
Using pulsar data from the Australia Telescope National Facility, they generated simulated pulse sequences that differed from the surrounding pulsar population. The researchers argue that such a difference could mark a signal shaped by intelligence, design or evolution, even if it carried no decipherable message.
