A study found that continuous electrical measurements identified successful electrode insertion with 88.9% reliability during surgery.
Researchers measured the electrical resistance around cochlear implant electrode contacts continuously during insertion. They compared the software’s assessment with the surgeon’s visual and hearing-based feedback about whether the array had been inserted successfully.
The prospective study included 34 patients receiving flexible lateral-wall electrode arrays at one medical center. The researchers report that the measurements could identify electrode contact insertion with 88.9% reliability and may provide feedback about misplacement during the operation.
