Seismo-ripples
Abstract
Earthquake prediction has long been considered one of the greatest challenges in the global scientific community due to the complex and uncertain nature of seismogenic processes, along with the prevailing consensus that earthquakes are inherently unpredictable. Here, we present a novel and potentially transformative concept—seismo-ripples—resonance signals consistently observed in seismic, magnetic, and ionospheric data prior to major earthquakes. The existence of seismo-ripples is supported by the hypothesis that natural frequency resonance occurs prior to fault failure. Through the analysis of extensive data from hundreds of magnetometers and ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in China, we have systematically identified seismo-ripples preceding numerous major earthquakes. Since June 2022, prospective anomaly based on seismo-ripples has demonstrated a strong predictive capability for numerous earthquakes with a magnitude ≥6, with remarkably minimal to no failure. Our comprehensive investigation highlights a high spatiotemporal correlation between seismo-ripples and forthcoming seismic events, allowing for reliable estimation of earthquake magnitude, location, and timing. Numerical simulations consistently suggest that seismo-ripples originate from large-scale ground vibrations that trigger atmospheric disturbances. These findings represent a significant step forward in overcoming the current limitations of earthquake prediction.
