Increased Vulnerabilities: Attachment Injuries in the Transition to Parenthood

0 citations

Abstract

The transition to parenthood is a significant life event that activates attachment processes and vulnerability for both partners, particularly during labor and delivery. Attachment injuries may arise when partners experience fear, helplessness, or perceived abandonment during childbirth. This article illustrates a clinical application of the Attachment Injury Resolution Model (AIRM) within an Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) framework through a fictional case vignette. Rather than solely focusing on the injury of one partner, emphasis is placed on recognizing and addressing mutual attachment injuries, highlighting how clinicians can facilitate healing for both partners. Implications for clinical practice and hospital-based interventions are discussed.
