Double vertebral arteries associated with a persistent primitive lateral basilovertebral anastomosis: A rare embryological configuration

Abstract
Vertebrobasilar vascular anomalies arise from disturbances during the embryological development of the longitudinal neural arteries (LNAs), the proatlantal artery of Padget–Arey (ProA), and the primitive lateral basilovertebral anastomosis (PLBA) [ 1 , 2 ]. We report a rare vertebral artery (VA) anomaly where the left VA divided at the V3 segment and remained as two separate arteries, each independently anastomosing with the contralateral VA and basilar artery (BA). Their embryological basis and clinical significance are discussed.
