Perspectives on Meditation-based Preparation for Psychedelic Experiences: Insights from Practitioners with Combined Meditation and Psychedelic Experience
Abstract
Abstract Objectives Emerging research suggests that meditation may support more beneficial psychedelic experiences while reducing the likelihood of lasting negative effects, yet its specific preparatory benefits remain underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the perceived utility of meditation as a preparatory tool for enhancing positive outcomes and reducing negative effects during psychedelic experiences. Method In a cross-sectional online survey, a self-selected sample of participants with histories of both meditation practice and psychedelic use completed a battery of standardised and study-specific measures. Results The sample comprised 123 experienced meditators with prior psychedelic use (66.7% male, mean age 41.1 years, drawn from 24 countries). Participants endorsed meditation training as broadly beneficial for psychedelic preparation, with consistently high scores on the Perceived Benefits of Meditation for Psychedelic Preparation (PBMPP) scale. These benefits varied by experience and tradition adherence: among practitioners with limited meditation experience (1–3 years) and fewer psychedelic sessions (1–20), those adhering to a specific meditation tradition reported significantly higher PBMPP scores than non-adherents, whereas among highly experienced meditators (10+ years) with limited psychedelic experience (1–20 sessions) this pattern reversed, with non-adherents scoring higher than adherents. When evaluating specific approaches, Loving-Kindness Meditation emerged as the most beneficial preparatory practice, receiving significantly higher ratings than other approaches such as Focused Attention. Exploratory factor analysis of meditative elements identified three components underlying perceived preparation value: Positive Emotional States (PES), Mindful Awareness and Insight (MAI), and Concentration Techniques (CT), with PES receiving the strongest endorsement. Participants also expected meditation training to increase Oceanic Boundlessness and reduce Anxious Ego-Dissolution during the experience. For practical implementation, participants recommended approximately 3 weeks of preparation with 30-min daily sessions, favouring online and asynchronous delivery. Conclusions These results provide empirical groundwork for developing effective evidence-based meditation protocols for psychedelic preparation and highlight the importance of considering psychedelic users’ level of previous meditation experience in optimising such interventions.
