Multiple Angle, High Resolution Photoelectron Spectroscopy
Abstract
A variable angle, high resolution photoelectron spectrometer has been built and is now being put into operation. This instrument, which uses 180 degree hemispherical analysers of 2.5 inch mean radius and a cylindrical scattering chamber, is thought to be different enough from present instruments now in this field to make a significant contribution upon its operation. The unit, as a whole, has been built. The iight source has undergone extensive testing and has been found to be operating with as high an intensity and good a monochromaticity as can be expected. Using an electron gun, current has been passed through the hemispherical analyser, thus proving that no major difficulties exist in this part of the unit. At present the electron counting system is under investigation as it has been a source of difficulty. While no predictions are made as to when the machine will become operational, the outlook is optimistic that the first spectrum is not too far away.
