This 2026 guideline reviews human-participant research on rehabilitation and recovery after adult stroke. It replaces a 2016 guideline and updates recommendations across areas including medical problems, falls, technology-assisted rehabilitation, caregiver support, work, and driving. Researchers reviewed 16 randomized trials involving 5,668 people with vascular dementia. Galantamine and memantine were linked with small changes on some cognitive test scores over the short term, but consistent benefits for daily functioning, overall condition, or behavior were not established.
A systematic review and meta-analysis examined medication-induced increases in blood pressure during the first 72 hours after certain acute ischemic strokes. Across three studies involving 366 people, those given this treatment were more likely to be functionally independent after 90 days, although the result does not establish that the treatment caused better recovery.
