Review finds mixed outcomes after fetal shunting for fluid around the lungs

Researchers reviewed 10 retrospective studies involving 416 human fetuses with isolated pleural effusion, meaning fluid had built up around the developing lungs. After pleuro-amniotic shunting, pooled estimates suggested survival in about two-thirds of cases and resolution of fetal hydrops in about three-fifths, but preterm birth and other complications were also common.

Review examines lung disease linked to artificial-stone dust
