Explosive and lava-forming eruptions at Ischia’s Montagnone volcano appear to have started from magma with similar pre-eruptive conditions. The findings suggest that differences in how magma moved toward the surface, rather than how it was stored, helped determine the eruption style.
A study of historic “Kolchedan amber” from the Iset River suggests that the fossil resin came from plants in the pine family, possibly related to the genus Pseudolarix. Infrared analysis also places it in a distinct and widespread type of Cretaceous resin found across Northern Eurasia.
Crystals from Kīlauea’s explosive eruption around 900 C.E. suggest its magma may have been stored for years without a last-minute injection of new magma. The result indicates that such mixing may not be necessary for an explosive eruption at the volcano.
