Study links rare hormone-producing tumors with higher liver and heart risks

Researchers studied adults with pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma, rare tumors that can produce excess stress-related hormones, using anonymized electronic health records. Compared with matched adults who had essential hypertension, those with these tumors had higher rates of fatty liver disease, serious liver complications and some cardiovascular outcomes over several years. Because this was an observational study, it shows associations rather than proving that the tumors caused these outcomes.

Review finds higher short-term risks for some people with cirrhosis after keyhole liver surgery

This human-health systematic review and meta-analysis examined outcomes after minimally invasive liver surgery in 12,892 patients, including 5,658 with cirrhosis. Cirrhosis was associated with higher rates of blood transfusion during surgery, conversion to open surgery, complications within 90 days, and death within 90 days, although the researchers said serious risk of bias limits confidence in these findings.
