A study of human lung epithelial cells found that chronic, low-dose inorganic arsenic exposure began changing cell metabolism within 48 hours—before cell transformation. The changes included more glutathione production, increased glycolysis and triglyceride buildup, patterns that also appeared after 24 weeks of exposure.
A study of 13 cereal-based products from Arak, Iran, found that estimated health risks varied widely between brands. Mercury drove the highest risk estimate for Tak pasta, while arsenic was the main factor for Zhik pasta; Zar, Mak and Jahan had much lower estimates.
In a mouse study, lead exposure from pregnancy through adulthood was linked to depression-like behavior, increased oxidative stress in the brain, and altered stress-hormone responses. Male and female mice showed different corticosterone patterns after stress.
