Water near the dam held more particles, while downstream sediment showed the greatest accumulation and ecological risk.
Researchers found microplastics in every water and surface-sediment sample collected from the Tapacurá Reservoir in northeastern Brazil, a tropical public water supply system. Concentrations were higher in the water near the dam, while sediment downstream contained the greatest accumulation.
The types of particles also differed between the two parts of the reservoir. Fibers made up most particles in the water, while fragments dominated sediment; the sediment’s ecological-risk index reached the study’s very high-risk category downstream.
Where the particles accumulated
Microplastics appeared in all water and sediment samples from the upstream, dam and downstream zones, across four sampling campaigns. Water concentrations ranged from 13,880 to 27,780 particles per cubic metre, while sediment concentrations ranged from 10,940 to 50,760 particles per kilogram.
The water near the dam had the highest concentrations, but sediment downstream had the greatest accumulation. Fibers accounted for 73% of the particles in water, while fragments made up 87% of those in sediment. Particles measuring 100–500 micrometres were the most common size in both compartments. Polypropylene and polyethylene were the dominant plastics, and particles with low degradation were most common overall. More moderately to highly degraded particles occurred downstream, consistent with greater weathering along the reservoir.
The ecological-risk indices indicated low to moderate risk in the water and very high risk in sediment, particularly downstream, where the sediment was classified as Class IV with a PLRI above 2,500. The authors associated this result with the accumulation of polymers considered highly hazardous.
Evidence and caveats
The study assessed water and surface sediment from the upstream, dam and downstream zones of the Tapacurá Reservoir during four sampling campaigns. It measured microplastic abundance, particle form, size, polymer type, degradation and ecological-risk indices. The abstract does not provide the sampling dates, the number of samples or details of how the risk indices were calculated. The risk assessment indicates potential ecological concern; it is not a direct measurement of harm to organisms or of risks to people using the reservoir water.
