Mutation Is Noise: The Information-Theoretic Impossibility of Undirected Macroevolution from Shannon Theory, Quantum Information, and Thermodynamics

Open access0 citations

Abstract

We formally classify biological mutations as noise in the precise technical sense defined by Shannon's mathematical theory of communication and derive five independent information-theoretic impossibility results for undirected macroevolution—the generation of new specified biological information through random mutation and natural selection alone. Theorem 1 (Formal Noise Classification): Mutations satisfy all five of Shannon's formal criteria for channel noise. Theorem 2 (Channel Capacity Ceiling): The Shannon capacity of the biological replication channel is bounded above by the information content of the original encoding; undirected noise cannot cause transmitted information to exceed this ceiling regardless of the number of transmission cycles. Theorem 3 (Entropy Convergence): Shannon information entropy, Landauer's thermodynamic bound, and the second law of thermodynamics independently establish that mutations increase entropy and decrease information content. Theorem 4 (Eigen–Shannon Equivalence): Eigen's error catastrophe threshold is mathematically equivalent to Shannon's channel capacity limit applied to self-replicating molecular sequences. Theorem 5 (Data Processing Inequality): For the biological Markov chain Genome → Phenotype → Selection → Next Generation, the data processing inequality guarantees that functional information content cannot increase at any stage. Each theorem is independently sufficient. Together they close every formal escape route. We show that the cell's own error-correction machinery empirically confirms the noise classification, that quantum information constraints (Holevo's bound, the no-cloning theorem) tighten rather than relax these limits, and that the law of excluded middle holds at the quantum level through the binary intent gate of the triadic Lagrangian. Testable predictions with quantitative thresholds are specified. Positive confirmation is provided by the observation that every known biological mechanism for generating new functional information—adaptive immunity, CRISPR-Cas acquisition, epigenetic reprogramming—involves directed selection (I ≠ 0, selection measure μ > 0), precisely as the triadic framework predicts. We conclude that macroevolution by undirected mutation is not merely unsupported but information-theoretically impossible—it violates the same formal constraints that prohibit perpetual motion and superluminal communication.
