Blistered by Benzodiazepines: A Rare Case of Lorazepam-induced Bullous Drug Reaction
Abstract
Abstract Lorazepam is routinely prescribed for managing alcohol withdrawal. It is particularly useful in patients with liver disease. However, lorazepam can cause side effects, such as sedation, respiratory depression, and ataxia, but cutaneous side effects are rare. A 40-year-old male with alcohol dependence consumption developed a red rash 12 h after the onset of lorazepam over the right cubital fossa, and in 36 h developed tense, fluid-filled blisters in the same area. Lorazepam was discontinued and chlordiazepoxide was started without changing any other medication, suggesting a causal relationship according to the Naranjo Adverse Drug Reaction Probability Scale. This case highlights the importance of considering lorazepam as one potential cause for cutaneous reactions. Early recognition can prevent significant morbidity and help guide alternatives to lorazepam in treating alcohol withdrawal in susceptible patients.
