Russo-Iranian Tank Cooperation: Between Entrapment and Alliance-Building
Abstract
The Russo-Iranian tank cooperation has not been the focus of research so far. Yet, this program is a puzzle piece in understanding the future of Russo-Iranian relations. Should Russia decide to help Iran build a modern tank fleet by exporting T-90 tanks and providing technology transfer, it could be the start of a Russian commitment to a deep and lasting relationship with Iran. This article, on the one hand, provides a brief history of the Iranian tank program since the Islamic Revolution. On the other hand, it explores past Russo-Iranian cooperation, analyzes why a shifting geopolitical situation would make Iran again strive to acquire modern tanks, and what would make Russia provide those.
