Local Scientific Development and Promotion of Scientific Vocations in Africa: The Case of Oilseeds

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Abstract This article presents an educational outreach initiative to promote interest in chemistry in Africa by connecting science to economic development. The project uses the transformation of oil from local oilseeds into soap as a concrete example of converting a local natural resource into a higher-value product, illustrating how science can become a lever for innovation and entrepreneurship. In outreach workshops throughout the Republic of Congo, high school students engaged in this project, which introduced high-level chemistry concepts through a real-world application in a local context. An assessment study found that the workshops led to the students’ comprehension of key chemical concepts while also increasing their self-confidence and motivation to pursue STEM fields. To create a more significant impact, we call for African scientists to play a more active role in science outreach and popularization efforts in order to strengthen the link between science, education, and sustainable development.
