Earthtender: A Proposed English Word for the Croatian Term Težak
Abstract
This essay proposes earthtender as a new English word for a culturally rich meaning of the Croatian term težak. The proposal emerged from a translation problem encountered while translating a previously published Croatian haiku. Existing English terms such as farmer, peasant, tiller, husbandman, and smallholder convey parts of the meaning, but do not fully capture the combination of physical labor, attachment to the land, endurance, livelihood, and personal identity associated with težak in the context examined here. The essay explains the formation of earthtender from earth and the idea expressed by to tend, considers its possible use in literary and cultural contexts, and discusses its role in translating the original haiku. Earthtender is presented as a linguistic candidate whose value will ultimately depend on use.
