Abstract
Abstract We characterize necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring approximation by smooth maps in the Sobolev space $$W^{1,\varphi }$$ W 1 , φ between suitable compact manifolds, where the prototypical example of Young function $$\varphi $$ φ is the double-phase integrand.
