Contesting Collecting: Indigenous Material Cultures

Open access0 citations

Abstract

This dialogue explores how we understand and contest the collecting of Indigenous material cultures. Poskett, using several case studies explores how Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives can complicate fixed notions of materiality. Russell, drawing on her own heritage and interdisciplinary research, emphasises cross-contextualization and the agency of Indigenous communities in shaping how cultural materials are interpreted. Together, they ask how Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives can reshape the history of science and museums.
