Novel QUASC–CI converter with HEO-PI controller for hybrid renewable microgrid application

Open access0 citations

Abstract

The changeover towards resilient and sustainable energy infrastructures has emphasized the integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) into the hybrid microgrids. Still, the non-linear and intermittent behavior of RESs poses issues, in maintaining a stabilized DC bus voltage and grid support. In this research, a hybrid microgrid system is proposed with a novel Quadratic Ultra-Gain Switched-Capacitor Coupled Inductor (QUASC CI) and an optimized controller to address the instabilities. The Photovoltaic (PV) system is incorporated with a QUASC CI converter, offering extended gain in voltage at reduced duty ratios, with minimized stress and losses. On the other hand, for regulation of converter, Hare Escape Optimized Proportional Integral (HEO-PI) controller is introduced. The microgrid system, also incorporates Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG), battery and grid interface, guaranteeing that the developed hybrid system effectively manages fluctuating renewable generation, delivering smoother power to load and supporting grid compliance. MATLAB studies prove that the QUASC CI converter in combination with HEO-PI controller offers superior converter efficiency of 96.49%, improved voltage gain, faster response of 0.15 s and reduced harmonic distortion, while confirming continuous grid integration.
