Abstract

This study examines the impact of studio culture on student learning. We present the analysis of a survey conducted among senior design undergraduates (N = 126) that explored their perceptions of design studio culture and its impact on their development as designers. The survey covers peer feedback, collaboration, teacher guidance, workload, competition, mental health, concentration, and time management. The study was informed by preliminary qualitative interviews, which guided the development of survey instrument. Quantitative analysis used descriptive statistics and Pearson correlations to identify patterns and relationships. Findings highlight both positive aspects and areas for improvement in studio culture, providing insights to improve undergraduates’ pedagogical experiences. The results of this study provide evidence of the impact of studio culture on learning and inform best practices for supportive studio environments. Additionally, the findings contribute to a discussion of the role of design studios framed by the challenges of contemporary academia. The article concludes with recommendations for balancing collaboration, individual work, and student well-being within studio education.
