Problematic Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Child-To-Parent Violence: An Exploratory Study from the Professionals’ Perspective

Abstract

Child-to-parent violence (CPV) is a growing concern, and problematic information and communication technology (ICT) use may contribute to intergenerational conflict. This exploratory qualitative study examined professionals’ perceptions of the relationship between adolescents’ problematic ICT use and CPV and identified family-based prevention and management strategies. Fifty-three group interviews were conducted with eight professionals at a juvenile reform center specializing in CPV in Madrid. Professionals associated problematic ICT use with family conflict, social isolation, and risky online behaviors, and described parental regulation as often insufficient. They emphasized consistent limits, preventing isolation, shared parent–adolescent activities, and responsible parental modeling as key strategies.
