Hierarchical Redistribution of Spatial Orientation Across the Eyes, Head, Trunk, and Body

Abstract

Hierarchical Redistribution of Spatial Orientation Across the Eyes, Head, Trunk, and Body presents a theoretical framework in which the eyes, head, trunk, and whole body are treated as nested orienting platforms contributing to a common three-dimensional spatial objective. Horizontal, vertical, roll, and oblique orientation may be distributed across these anatomical levels according to their relative mobility and constraint. The central principle is hierarchical redistribution of orientational demand: participation of larger platforms reduces the movement required from smaller nested levels, whereas restriction of the body, trunk, or head transfers a greater proportion of the same spatial task to the remaining mobile structures. Vestibular and gravitational mechanisms provide a continuous reference for this organization through ocular counter-roll, physiological skew deviation, and related graviceptive responses. The framework generates testable predictions, including progressive unloading, neutralization, and possible reversal of gaze-related ocular torsion as corresponding head roll increasingly contributes to tertiary orientation. It also introduces Oblique Torsional Stress Testing (OTST) as an exploratory clinical application for assessing gaze-dependent torsional instability.
