Convergent Parallel Mixed-Method Study of Frameworks and Consideration of Ethical AI-assisted Research Paper

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies are being adopted both in academic research work as the emerging development of writing. Benefits and advantages these tools provide, however, come with ethical issues that challenge authorship, transparency, bias-base of research and research integrity. In this study we explore the affordances and constraints in AI-assisted writing tools and argue for an ethical framework enabling their effective use in an academic setting. We gathered data from 200 participants including academic researchers, graduate students, university administrative, AI developers and ethicists. Results of perceived benefits and risks of AI tools reliably predict ethical concerns, to some extent moderated by demographic group. Policymakers, researchers and institutions are outlined in the study’s horizon on how AI integration for academic writing can be ethically done. landmarks.
