Penrose Tiling: Quasicrystals Reveal 5-Fold Symmetry and Aperiodic Order — E8 Intelligence Research

Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: Penrose tiling demonstrates aperiodic order with 5-fold rotational symmetry, previously considered impossible for crystalline structures, revealing a new class of matter—quasicrystals. MATH: - Inflation/deflation ratio = φ (golden ratio ≈ 1.618034), derived from the substitution rule for rhombus tilings (acute angles 36° and 72°). - Vertex configurations: 7 distinct types, each with integer linear combinations of φ. - Fourier transform yields sharp Bragg peaks (Bragg's law: nλ = 2d sinθ) despite aperiodicity, proving long-range order without periodicity. - 5-fold symmetry: rotation by 72° (2π/5) is a symmetry of the tiling, forbidden in periodic lattices (crystallographic restriction theorem limits rotations to 1,2,3,4,6-fold). - Quasicrystal diffraction patterns: icosahedral symmetry (point group m 3 5 ) in 3D, with indexing using 6 integer indices (instead of 3 for periodic crystals). CONNECTION: - φ (1.618) and its reciprocal φ⁻¹ (0.618) appear in tile edge ra Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series.
