Integrated Developmental Love-Criteria and Reward Model
Abstract
The Integrated Developmental Love Criteria and Reward Model (DLCM) is a theoretical hypothesis framework that integrates early attachment-related development, relational coping pathways, subjective criteria of love, reward regulation, vulnerability, control, and dependency processes into a single dynamic model. The model proposes a developmental transition from the Fundamental Prenatal Need for Attachment (PFNA), represented as the asymmetrical structure “SUBJECT ATTENDS TO ME,” toward the Fundamental Need for Attachment (FNA), an interpersonal structure in which “TWO AUTONOMOUS SUBJECTS ATTEND TO EACH OTHER.” The experience of sufficiently unconditional love, emotional safety, and non-performance-contingent acceptance is proposed to support the development of this reciprocal structure. When this developmental process is disrupted, different coping pathways may emerge, including narcissistic overcompensation, codependent submission/accommodation, and avoidant deactivation. The Developmental Love Criteria Model describes the individual’s dynamic “map” of relational and reward conditions, while the currently active position on this map represents the person’s momentary relational operating state. The model distinguishes healthy reciprocity from compensatory strategies and examines how repeated relational experience and reward feedback may modify these active positions over time. A second major component, the Reward Transformation Principle (RTP), proposes that changes in relational development may transform the distribution of experienced reward across attachment, intimacy, achievement, status, control, validation, material reward, and other sources. A vulnerability core is modeled separately from experienced reward. Emptiness and control need are treated as dynamically related but non-identical constructs, while reward derived from control, power, or superiority is treated as a separate reward category. The framework further examines differences between more covert/vulnerable and more grandiose narcissistic configurations, including reward-source redundancy and concentration, hidden dependency, sexuality as both reward and regulatory function, and possible pathways toward narcissistic collapse. Invisible Intermittent Reinforcement Bonding (IIRB) is proposed as one possible mechanism through which alternating access to relational reward and control may strengthen hidden dependency. The model does not present these mechanisms as empirically established facts or diagnostic criteria. It is intended as an integrative and testable hypothesis framework that generates conceptual distinctions, proposed mechanisms, and empirical predictions for future research on attachment, narcissistic functioning, relational dependency, reward regulation, and vulnerability.
