Softening the Emergency Room Experience

Abstract

Emergency departments (EDs) are critical healthcare environments designed for rapid medical response; however, their spatial and sensory conditions often intensify patient anxiety and fear. While emergency architecture traditionally prioritizes efficiency, visibility, and clinical control, less attention has been given to how these environments are experienced by users under conditions of stress and uncertainty. This study investigates how architectural conditions contribute to emotional responses in emergency-related healthcare environments, focusing on anxiety and fear as key experiential outcomes. By adopting a practice-led research approach, the study uses a case-based spatial reading as an interpretive method to examine a multi-level healthcare facility in Budapest. Through systematic observation and analysis of spatial configuration, circulation patterns, lighting conditions, and waiting areas, the research identifies how variations in architectural design influence perceived safety, orientation, and emotional experience. The findings demonstrate that anxiety and fear are not solely consequences of medical uncertainty but are significantly shaped by spatial legibility, sensory load, and perceived control embedded in the built environment. By comparing renovated and unrenovated areas within the same facility, the study highlights the role of architectural conditions in either intensifying or moderating emotional stress without changes in medical function. The research contributes to healthcare architecture by emphasizing the importance of spatial clarity, sensory moderation, and experiential continuity as key considerations in the design and evaluation of emergency environments.
