The Structural Law of Transformation - Universal Conditions for Systems under Change

Abstract

This paper tells the discovery before it tells the machinery. La Profilée began as a form, became an architecture for separating duration from change, then turned into a question that crossed design, physics, biology, chemistry, cognition and artificial systems. Its central claim is deliberately large: identity-preserving transformation has a minimal structural architecture. If that claim is wrong, it should be breakable. This paper presents the discovery, its central derivational logic, its implications, and the conditions under which its claims can fail. The complete formal derivation and domain proofs are provided in the technical works of the La Profilée programme. 1. The question hidden inside every change We can describe the expansion of a star, the development of an organism, the reaction of a molecule, the learning of a person, the replacement of a machine component and the update of an artificial agent. The mechanisms have almost nothing in common. Yet every description quietly contains the same grammatical commitment: something is changing. What is the thing that is changing? The question is easy to miss because ordinary language answers it for us. We say the tree grew, the patient recovered, the molecule changed configuration, the company reorganized, the software was updated. The noun remains in place while the predicates change. But science cannot ultimately rely on grammar. If the object before and after a transformation is not the same object in the relevant sense, then we are not describing a change of one thing. We are describing succession, replacement, branching, fusion, disappearance or the birth of something else. That means every science of change needs, somewhere, a way to distinguish a changed state of a continuing entity from a change of entity. Some disciplines possess sophisticated local criteria. What La Profilée claims was missing is a common explicit architecture beneath those local answers: what carries continuity, what may vary, how variation remains attributable to the same whole, whether something still exists, and whether what exists is still the same.
