Theory of Functional Agency: A System Dynamics Model Based on Boundary Maintenance, Internal-Origin Identification & Connection, and Irreversible State Change

Abstract

[Abstract]This paper redefines the concept of "Agency"—which has long been conflated with psychological attributes such as "consciousness" or "intention," or biological structures—from a functional perspective, formulating an axiomatic system of "Functional Agency" as a universal framework. This paper frames agency not as a static property, but as an "operating process" in interaction with the external environment, proposing three axioms (Boundary Maintenance, Internal-Origin Identification & Connection, and Irreversible State Change) as necessary and sufficient conditions independent of hardware implementation or internal intelligence. By introducing this axiomatic framework, "Functional Agency" is explicitly decoupled from "Intelligence" and "Communicability," making it possible to objectively position the operation itself that undergoes irreversible structural updates with the environment as an "agent," even for systems lacking high-level cognitive capabilities or communicability with human observers. This paper has a complementary relationship with the parallel paper, Theory of Coupled Entity Life, which addresses the dynamics of how these single-cycle operations continuously couple and effectively control space, with the present paper presenting the micro-level operating process. [Japanese Title]主体性機能論:境界形成・識別接続・不可逆変化に基づくシステム作動モデル [Japanese Abstract]本論文は、従来「意識」や「意図」などの心理属性、あるいは生体構造と混同されてきた「主体性(Agency)」の概念を機能的観点から再定義し、普遍的なフレームワークとして「主体性機能(Functional Agency)」の公理系を定式化するものである。本論では、主体性を静的な属性ではなく外部環境との相互作用における「作動プロセス」として捉え直し、ハードウェアの実装や知性の有無に左右されない必要十分条件として、3つの公理(「境界形成」「内部起点からの識別接続」「不可逆的状態変化」)を提示する。本公理系により、「主体性機能」と「知性」および「通信可能性」が明確に分離され、高度な思考能力を持たないシステムであっても、環境との間で不可逆な構造更新を起こす作動そのものを「主体」として客観的に位置づけることが可能となる。なお、この単発作動が連続・結合し空間を実効支配していく動態を論じた並列論文『結合体生命論』とは相補的な関係を有し、本論はミクロな作動プロセスを提示するものである。
