Redefining Successful Transition: Integrating Sexual and Reproductive Health into Transitional Urology

Abstract

Abstract Purpose of Review Transitional urology has advanced over the past two decades, emphasizing readiness, self-management, and transfer to adult care. However, sexual and reproductive health is rarely included in measures of successful transition despite its importance to adult well-being. This review examines its role in transitional urology, summarizes recent advances, and proposes a framework for integrating these discussions across development. Recent Findings Recent studies highlight growing recognition of sexual and reproductive health in transitional care, especially for adolescents and young adults with congenital urologic conditions. Significant gaps remain in patient education, provider training, and standardized assessment. New counseling frameworks, readiness tools, and educational resources have emerged, but existing approaches are fragmented and often diagnosis-specific. Summary Sexual and reproductive health is an underdeveloped domain in transitional urology. We propose a longitudinal, stakeholder-based framework and emphasize that successful transition should include preparation for the sexual and reproductive aspects of adult life.
